"Anecdote" and "theory" have diametrically opposed connotations: humorous versus serious, specific versus general, trivial versus overarching, short versus grand. Jane Gallop writes a book on this. She is a professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
