Letter 14: “Learning is an Act of Courage”

Post by mosmanski » 05 Nov 2019, 21:08

The social meeting exercise brought the three of us together by chance. We were grouped together alphabetically in the Fishbowl and knew little else about each other. We took a chance and met over coffee to hear each other’s experiences.

This took courage because our differences were unknown. Similarity is comforting, but this was not guaranteed. We must embrace our differences and face them with courage.

Letter 15: "Your assemblages"

Post by mosmanski » 05 Nov 2019, 21:58

Each group is a society of its own. As such, each society draws from different experiences, images and symbols. This is how each group, each assemblage, is different from the next.

Letter 47: Further reflections on your performance
“ Self-representational”-- Professor Dugal
My work is, “self-representational” in the fishbowl. It describes me, depicts my thoughts in a meticulous way. My symbols, how I make my selections and why are all shown. Hopefully I can convey new knowledge and improve my abilities, this I hope for.

Letter 48: Widening your range of caring
“By taking charge through carefully thought-out acts, you widened your range of caring”-- Professor Dugal. In the fish bowl I can see us all trying to achieve this. We are widening not only our “range of caring” but are challenging ourselves to widen our thoughts. We think out what we want to convey in a very careful way. Working with my group and reading other students posts is opening my mind, it has been a pleasure so far.

Letter 50: Reorienting one's Vision: The Return
“Always return to the site.” It is to the look that you are returning”--Professor Dugal. When reading your letter this stood out to me. It reminded me of the phrase, “come full circle”. We must let our thoughts expand, to take our words and ideas further, yet we must also come back and make sure we recognize how they fit into the bigger picture.

Letter 16: “Constructing and creating knowledge content from a knowing experience”

Post by mosmanski » 07 Nov 2019, 14:42

During the social meeting, much was said, much was observed, and much was learned. So much, in fact, that we couldn’t write about it all. We had to focus on the most important topics for our assignment, which required reflection.

Letter 17: “Sharing the World: Reading your social meeting reflections”

Post by mosmanski » 07 Nov 2019, 19:20

The social meeting exercise introduced me to a new way of thinking. By focusing on the text (the ethnographic notes) I made observations through my reflection that I might not have otherwise discovered.

Letter 18: “Further reflection on your social meeting papers”

Post by mosmanski » 07 Nov 2019, 19:30

I am intrigued by the concept of thoughts being informed by action.

In my own life when I feel overwhelmed with a project, I find it helpful to just start somewhere, anywhere. This, in turn, creates momentum and more action follows. It also gets me thinking about the project and eventually I am able to identify a strategy.

Letter 19: “Idealizations”

Post by mosmanski » 07 Nov 2019, 19:58

This letter surfaced an important fact of life: “Life is a constant adjustment between the models we make and realities we encounter.” – Professor Dugal

This reminds me of an abstraction I wrote for the social meeting exercise: “Our expectations can cloud reality.”

We must accept the imperfections of our world and not get stuck in fantasies of Utopia.

Letter 20: “Society of consumers”

Post by mosmanski » 07 Nov 2019, 20:35

In the society of consumers we follow the flow of liquid modernity and value trends over products themselves.

On the internet, we produce data about ourselves which is compiled and sold because of the immense value it holds. In the society of consumers, we create enormous value, yet often for the benefit of others.

Letter 51: Recounting anecdotes and honoring lived experiences
“Anecdotes”
This word reminds me of a little story my grandmother would always tell me. It would make us laugh till we cried as kids. She always had the best anecdotes and stories.

Letter 52:constructing social memories
“active unification of parts” --Professor Dugal
This is done by constructing out 10+1 papers. I am excited to continue my journey through these papers. My group has been working diligently and absorbing our felt experiences, learning about each other.

Letter 53: Cybernetics and your fishbowls
“That is to say, in your fishbowls, it is not only what you are doing, it is what is happening and, what is becoming you and your fishbowl.”--Professor Dugal
We are becoming in our fishbowls. We are building ideas, constructing, going further with words and creating new knowledge. This task is overwhelming at times, but I enjoy a challenge.

Letter 54: Please fact-check your virtual products in your fishbowls
“self-reflection”--Professor Dugal
This is a critical and important part of what we are doing in the fishbowl. I will go back this week and make sure it is evident in what I post. I strive to reflect, because from reflection new ideas appear, new images and words associated with it as well. This is interesting.

Letter 52: Constructing social memories
Paulo Freire (creating history as possibility) was one of the most influential philosophers of education of the twentieth century.
He influence the theory on education. He also talks about, “love and respect that allow us to engage people in dialogue and to discover ourselves in the process”. This I find very interesting and true. As I go about life respect and love do allow people to talk freely and discover new things.

Letter 53: Please fact-check your virtual products in your fishbowls
"Investigative journalism” is a form of journalism in which reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, such as serious crimes, political corruption, or corporate wrongdoing.
“Instrumentality” is defined as a fact or quality of serving as an instrument or means to an end; agency.
