"Connectivity is big"
"Its like a gymnasium. You don’t want to enter the fishbowl to see yourself and see others. You want to exercise your mind."
"You’re looking at yourself in the mirror to see how does your mind look. Thats what it means to be in the gym, you are working on yourself until the last sentence."
"I am making a commitment to read every text of my group members"
"Connections with other people will happen in my head"
"It happens through the exchange of symbols"

We connect through words. We lead symbolic lives, which means that we textual lives. Nothing exists outside words.

" you are writing words to add value to the group by carefully selecting words"
Restructuring creates value. We are learning how to restructure.

You're creating knowledge. Every time you put things into divisions and subdivisions, you are creating knowledge.

You're creating your own reality, and sustaining each others' lives.

Distraction means I'm not slowing down, I'm not focusing, and I'm not selecting my words nor substituting them to create value.

You're entering here to create value for two other people.
Our difference are realized in our mental structures and we want to get at that. These differences are in the words that we select, and we're trying to connect across these differences.

How so?

Aghast - filled with horror or shock

The social meeting exercise. The concept of pre-individual
1. Write out notes before the meeting (thoughts before meeting) a.k.a ethnographic notes.
2.Chat about anything and everything except about the class.
3. Write out everything about the meeting (as much as you can remember).
4. Circle 6 words. Words are symbols, concepts, phenomenons
5. Put the 6 words into 3 pairs. (putting them into dichotomies)
6. Words have to be opposites
7. Take the meaning of the words further, go into the dictionary and define them
8. Create a simple sentence from the words, 3 sentences in all. Under each sentence, write a paragraph(short) describing the social meeting. Sentence is an abstraction, has nothing to with the social meeting.

Creating history as possibility - Paolo Ferreira
Nuance
You don't want to copy because you want to experience for yourself.

We’re entering the unknown and we can’t comprehend it.

You’re determining your own structures.

You’re learning to construct meaning.

You can’t just read stuff and reproduce it, not knowing what it means.

You’re taking each word, looking at the options to substitute that word, and reframing that word.

We all think in very different ways.

The difference is in the words we select.

You can only innovate when you’re open to different ideas, different words, different substitutions.

There’s no right or wrong. You just have to take the action.

You create intersubjective spaces.

Your selected words, symbols, and ideas are making an impact to the group.

Eyes looking at eyes.

We’re learning nonlinear thinking. It’s not about being confused.

We are craftsmen of words.

Critical thinking means different perspectives.

You’re working to be a phenomenologist.

Looking at phenomena.

We’re looking at ourselves looking at ourselves.

You’re learning through association.

Integrated networking structures

1. Opening structure
a. Integrated networking structure
i. You’re entering the unknown with a given a structure
ii. You’re never without a structure
2. You’re gathering words, creating a wordpool, using a dictionary, and writing the words down (integrated, networking, structures)
- The words are resources
3. You’re rewriting the sentence, substituting the words, making it very simple. Use all 3 concepts.
- Look up the meaning of the word relate/relational, take the words further and further
- It’s not about the meaning, it’s about the substitute
4. You’re now in the first person. First person means “I”
- You’re describing an incident, explaining it, it’s coming from your memory. It’s experiential, you experienced it.
- It’ll take thinking, interpreting, and imagining. Steps 3 and 4 must fit together.
5. Now, you start an interaction. Read partner’s work and summarize into one word. Summarize your own work into one word as well.
- You don’t want to be told what to think
6. Step 6 is also done interactively. Jointly determine which two words to form a dichotomy out of the 9 words. The two words should be as opposite as possible.
7. Do a word pool for the two words.
8. Create a joint structure out of the word pool. Inflection point
9. On your own. Doing a felt experience.
10. Perceptual categories
11. Insight and realization

We want to catch up so we can move on

We’re learning to learn

Shift your attention in this course

When you’re creating knowledge, you’re on your own

You’re learning to create a better society

You’re sharing your knowing

How are you sharing your knowing? Through self reflection

Self reflection is what goes through your mind when you look at a particular word, image, or text.

Social constructivism; the social construction of reality.

Symbolic interaction, participant observation, action research, autoethnography

We’re looking at diversity differently, we’re looking the differences in our selections of symbols

We’re all unique, “we’re all footnotes, but we’re in the center in the page”

The journey is inwards

You’re learning to self organize

Integrated networking structures

You never really put the pen down until you take your last breath

Don’t be afraid of getting it wrong the first time

You’re calibrating each others’ minds

Aghast

Peter Senge – the learning organization; the fifth discipline
