Fishbowl Final
New Society - Fishbowl
I have spent this semester working with in the fishbowl environment and interacting with my team members and colleagues in the class. This has created a new society in the business college through which I would describe as “Eyes looking at Eyes.” To expand on that quote, I am looking at you, looking at me, looking at you. I have formed the fishbowl experience with the purpose of understanding and creating knowledge. I have taught myself to be emerged in the text of the fishbowl. Which in a practical sense meant that I gave myself a minimum of 15 minutes everyday to expand my knowledge, vocabulary & view of the world with the freedom of no right vs wrong and no judgement.
I have developed the comprehension of felt-experiences through images by asking myself “How do I see the world?” and looking deeper into the image in my mind. The linking of words and images creates word structures and in turn allows the sharing of images to evoke words. Through this we become a society.
I learned how and was also limited to expressing these felt experiences through the 10+1 step exercises. This process started with challenging me to enter the unknown with a given structure. I created a word pool through gathering words and writing them down in order to create a structured network. The process of re-structure consisted of rewriting the sentence through a selection process and then substituting words to make it simple. I connected these re-structured words to a felt experience using the first person and describing an incident, explaining it through a memory to tell my story. Allowing me to be grounded in knowledge and my experience. Restructuring and felt experiences fit together through abstraction in my own words. Then through the formation of dichotomy to compare two unrelated words. Repeating these steps until the final paragraph consists of insight, understanding and realization.
Through gaining a deeper understanding of the four structures we used within the 10+1 step exercise I am able to connect these concepts to the global business world. The idea of unique innovation capabilities allows for a firm to transform an idea into something new that carries an economic value. This is true for new startup companies that create an innovative product, but also for older companies trying to keep up with the ever changing world by innovating their old products. During this class I practiced this skill through my individual writings in the fishbowl as I was able to come up with new ideas and create unique text. As well as, looking back at my old text and expanding on the thoughts I had then to create new unique ideas.
The concept of dynamic decision making is the skill of making decisions in an ever changing environment due to the outcome of previous decisions or events that have taken place outside the control of the decision maker. I will need to use this skill in the business world when taking a new position. As well as, adjusting to a new environment both inside the workplace and outside the workplace in the economic, political, and social aspect of that environment. I was able to practice this concept through reading the letters and responding. I was receiving this new unfamiliar text that was outside of my control and it was my responsibility to adapt my way of thinking and make a decision as to how I was going to respond within the fishbowl.
A complex adaptive system is a system in which a perfect understanding of an individual parts does not mean that there is a perfect understanding of the whole system's behavior. This often pertains to a supply chain in the global business world. As often times the individual suppliers and vendors do not have that communication or knowledge of one another’s systems. This creates a disconnect from having the comprehension of the whole system. This is why it was crucial for my team to communicate not only outside of the classroom but have that in person connection and communication to truly allow for our “system” to work as a whole. That way if team members were not meeting the groups expectations or deadlines we had set for ourselves it allowed for us to take a step back and adapt to fix the problem together.
Integrated networking structure states the relationship between social connections and business. In the business world the importance of networking is crucial to providing mutual benefits for both parties in regards to resources and potential clients or customers. These connections are often established through social networking websites such as LinkedIn and through education. In this class I was able to establish relationships with not only my team members but the peers in my class. I was able to receive insight in different majors as well as contrasting knowledge and ways of thinking different than my own.
This overall experience in Business 345 has allowed me to create a new society with in the fishbowl and in return has opened my understanding to the importance of felt experiences both of my own and of my peers. I have been able to not only look at the eyes of my classmates but have been able to see through them expanding my knowledge, vocabulary and view of the world.
