“Design the way you think”
Vocab is the key to the business world
“Create value by skimming and choosing one sentence to link thought to”
Active learning creates a society
Design is an “iterative process”
Calculated through numerous iterations, moving closer with each consecutive iteration
Every decision you see will arise from:
*Bad design
*Poor management
Today we have a crisis of perception
Perception determined by vocab & stems from communications
Always stay grounded in the vocabulary
You know something after you’ve felt it
When you write something that impacts someone’s mind, they remember it.

We are “knowledge workers”
We create it ourselves,
He needs to see a process.
We are sharing our thought processes.
We are sorting what we deleted and what we left out.
The way our mind works, is the resource we bring to the company.
Watching our mind works.
They are the celebrities in the field,
Know a sentence about them
Do work continually, over the course of the semester for an “A”
Taking ownership of your text
Knowing experience and knowledge
Creating mental spaces and where you are in it.
Creating knowledge is Tentative
Interaction is all going under Assignment #1
Vignette (episode)
10 steps
1. Opening structure.
Entering the unknown
Always enter on a structure
Opening
2. Gathering words
Process of gathering words
Drawing boundary of context (from dictionary)
Writing substitutes
Taking another work and taking it further
Wider you throw the net, the larger your pool
3. Create a new sentence from word pool
Simple, one that you like
Captures the summary of the first structure
Coming up with a sentence that’s yours, A creative process.
Phd candidates cant abstract, you can’t create knowledge without an abstract.
Letting the wordpool speak to you
4. A felt Experience:
Words and how they relate to each other.
Describe an incident, talking about yourself
It has to fit the abstraction.
To talk for real is an abstract with a felt experience
5. Working together
You can’t do step 5 without group
Giving each other (sharing) “perceptual categories”
Reductionist technique
Looking at a picture and reducing it to one word.
Let each other get the word before you share
Your giving off yourself
Each give three words: (9 words total)
Sharing symbols
6. Jointly: Out of the 9 words, you’re creating a dichotomy
You want a good dichotomy
If its an adjective, it’s a bad dichotomy.
7. Taking dichotomy and creating a new word pool
Push the boundary of your mind.
Doing it jointly
8. restructure
9. Felt experience
10. Perceptual gathering
11. Realization and insight
Improving your english/vocab
Always in a state of becoming, Always in formation
Following the scent

Participant observation
Symbolic interaction
Come up with a design
It is easy to pull out work
Write a conceptual work
Conference stuff
Getting coauthorship
Undergraduate research
Other avenues
Use the class to finish work
A metaphor is a bridge between the concrete world and the abstract mind, linking something known to the senses to to abstraction of the mind, always working to describe the abstract with the concrete: “conscience is man’s compass” as Vincent Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo

10/23/19
Conceptualization is where the money is made
Learning in conceptualization
Learning will happen later, It will bounce up in your mind
Always taking notes, It is where the connection
An event or occasion is not about asking dumb questions but asking questions that move you forward.
Cautions about metaphor task:
A restructuring can be good but for it to be an abstraction must be shorter than the original. Keep it to 2 maximum. Exchanging words to utilize their different meanings.
We want to see how we think. See our sequence of thought.
Felt experience to match abstraction (it must fit, or its mumbo jumbo)
Empower your text with examples
Without this we are simply cutting and pasting
Keep substituting until it is a very simple sentence
Must keep it short, as we dont have much time in the limelight
Reification: a complex idea for when you treat something immaterial — like happiness, fear, or evil — as a material thing. This can be a way of making something concrete and easier to understand, like how a wedding ring is the reification of a couple's love
There is no future in felt experience, It is in the past.
You’re learning to write your own textbook
To capture them for knowing and knowledge creation
Looking at words as symbols. Taking the text down.
9/11, writing eulogy for fallen firefighters.
WORDS:
Wounded
Management problem
Faced with a huge problem
One word at a time
We need people who can express
Looking for emotions to evoke
A human problem
When you talk like this, you see their relationship
You select the word through our imagination
Social construction of reality
Social interaction between these two
Self reflexivity
Imagination
Text
Metaphors
She’s been working the text so its impactful.
You take the word further.
You have to make the distinction between the boss and the leader.

“You’re designing text, an organization which we are looking at as reading and writing.”
Words will show you the way
Ways of thinking,
Each way of thinking is known as a discourse
Designing innovative organization between the three of us.
Start the second project.
QUIALITY is created wehn you match it with a felt experience projecting to the abstract
Ballroom come into org nd rite report. machine not good always learning & mech think not coincide. Does Not allow innovation. Got her own steps
Journey of scott.
Look at design of org where fran & scott to thrive. Thats challenge
Psychic prisons
The guys
Power words images
Meaning to group
Sentence: let’s start calling ourselves designers. As designers were becoming our own theorists using images and metaphors (WORDS). Words have images attached to is and metaphors do too. Whenever you select an image, your selecting a metaphor. To engage in a continuous construction and deconstruction of meaning. You deconstruct meaning every time you substitute the word. In your encounters with everyday reality. Your engaged with that. Highly personalized method
Using the metaphor of reading and writing organizational life as its dominant frame.
Textual analysis and discourse analysis

Start writing like this
Theoretical statement is a generalized statement
The felt-statement is personal
Realize there is a connection between two things
There is a tendency to use big words.
Should take them further until they are simple
The simpler the sentence, the stronger it will be
To become simple is a job
To be simple, you have to work hard at it
If you are simple without hardwork, that’s cliche.
Reflexive leadership
Next statement
Next stage is to write out all the sentences and all dichotomies we’ve written across all four
16 sentences 4 dichotomies
Possible 5th sentence
Step after, select (circle) 15 words from list of sentences, and put them into 5 boxes (dichotomy inside box, third word outside the box. Then create a structure for each, 5 sentences.
Next sentence: Knowledge as objective or literal truth, places too much emphasis on the object of knowledge and not enough on the paradigms, perspectives, assumptions, language games, and frames of reference of the observer.
Due by next week
Go deeper and go back to it and read it.
Ask how so when you return to the paragraph
Throwing out the theory and keeping it in the sense of the question “how so?”
‘Deep thinking’ (google)
Personal lived example
Comes from something ordinary/small
Dichotomies decide trajectory of our thought process
Creativity has come to the forefront of the market
Using the film as a catalyst
What is my creative process.
Example phrases:
After post to the fishbowl how you are creative
“Started with an idea from the universe to be lunar but organic, then visualized it and began to gather.”
“The spark that makes people strive to better things”
“Fixing things and trying to problem solve”
“Just think about what’s around me that can be joined.”
“Begins with the material and the material knows what it wants to be”
“Feeding off the energy of people around me through inspiration”
“Looking at previous work, and some spontaneity”
“To push back and have some idea of where we’re going”
“ trial and error, not trying to better yourself just creating”
“Resources, what you have to work with and the possibilities”
“Thinks of cartoon characters, drawing what’s in his head”
“Being completely present”
“The universal language”
“Entering into a place of darkness, not afraid of making something that’s bad”
“Collaborative, spontaneous”
“Inspiration from a moment”
“Produce functional art”
“Driven to be creative, looking at it from different angles @ different times”
“Finding things that inspire me, sometimes methodical or spontaneous”
“Have a vision, see a need”
“Think about the idea and what he wants to do with it”
“What you want to see, not what others want to see”
“What allows people to function on a daily basis, starts with questions”
“Embrace your surroundings”
“Comes naturally”
