Developing a process:
Google cognitive dissonance

Going through a cognitive dissonance. The Fishbowl is new to everyone and a new way of thinking, therefore, my thoughts and attitude are inconsistent to how I normally work. It is a change in my techniques as a student that I have to adapt to. Creating a process that adds value.

Vocab:
Develop - grow or cause to grow and become more mature, advanced, or elaborate
Visualize - form a mental image of; imagine

“You are in the process of developing a process”
We’re creating our own way of learning and understanding through our use of the Fishbowl. We’re learning new syntax and ways to use that syntax to communicate our thoughts/ideas

PRACTICE: the actual application or use of an idea, belief, or method, as opposed to theories relating to it
PROCESS: a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end

Question on Fishbowl

Fishbowl is built on methodologies that provide us with a new way of learning. The beginning is filled with confusion, but that will eventually subside the more we dive in. We have to stick to it in order to succeed.

Vocab:
Chaos - complete disorder and confusion
Confusion - lack of understanding; uncertainty
Embrace - accept or support (a belief, theory, or change) willingly and enthusiastically
Resistance - the refusal to accept or comply with something

Re-structuring

Google “Criticism” - it is a pedagogical tool
CRITICISM - the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes; the analysis and judgement of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work
→ evaluation, assessment, fault-finding, judgement, notation
Can be done in either a positive or negative manner

The pre-individual consists of the initial thoughts and feelings when it comes to a structure. Through criticism and varying perceptions that come from the interactions of opposing views, the pre-individual’s perception will change. This is where the fine tuning comes in and we see a change within syntax, allowing for a restructure. I think you can re-structure again and do better.

Watching and viewing the machine as a metaphor

The more work you do in the Fishbowl, the more you will understand and learn how to evolve your syntax.
Review the concepts, think about metaphor.
We’re learning from each other → from there we can improve upon ourselves and have a better understanding on differing perceptions so that we can transform our work.

Reading the other’s posting

Read other’s posts without distraction, do it in a way to better yourself and your understanding. This will bring us to new words and viewpoints.
Fully immerse yourself within the text to dive deeper into its meaning.
The Fishbowl is like the unknown → it will provide everyone with a new experiential learning.

New forms of intimacy and friendship

Google Anthony Giddens
Social meeting exercise provided us with newly formed friendships to better understand our group members, and create a bond that will assist us throughout our assignments during the semester

Being in a state of becoming

Google Deleuze
Understanding of Strictly Ballroom - Scott was in a state of becoming as he learns to step away from the rules and create his own steps and way of living. He was influenced by Fran and her grandmother to learn new steps.

“It is not one of imitation or analogy, it is generative of a new way of being that is a function of influences rather that resemblances”
Scott was influenced by Fran and her grandmother to have a new way of being. He didn’t imitate them, but instead took what he learned to create his own way of being.

THEORY: a supposition or system of ideas intended to explain something
TERM: a word or phrase used to describe a thing or to express a concept, especially in a particular kind of language or branch of study

Why we teach each other

Communicating to a group that consists of people with different understandings, ideas, and narratives in a way that will unite everyone
We all have a commitment - to teach each other
If we do our jobs right we can learn as we teach, change the world, and change our perceptions
Bad teachers waste time - their own and those they are teaching
Good teachers competently teach - nothing amazing, but does the job
Great teacher give something from deep inside of themselves - do more than asked, learn more
All revolves around passion and care - we need to participate, question, and listen to learn from each other

Learning is an act of courage

We are learning from each other - understanding different viewpoints, but also creating a deeper understanding
More to learn as we compare/contrast our differences - the social meeting allows us to develop a new syntax
—> As we understand our groups better, we create a new meaning within the Fishbowl

“The question is: do you have courage?”
We must have courage to move forward and step into the unknown as we go further in the Fishbowl. If we don’t have the courage we won’t develop a new meaning, new words, or learn from each other

GOAL: the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result
POSSIBILITY: a thing that may happen or be the case
COURAGE:the ability to do something that frightens one

COMPARE: estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between
CONTRAST: compare in such a way as to emphasize differences

Constructing and creating knowledge content from a knowing experience
Google Brenda Laurel

Quote by Brenda Laurel, “In the ‘world of immersion’... but rather the construction of utterly personal experiences.”
→ Our social meeting exercise is a personal experience we share to others. The information we’ve gathered on the people we’ve met is then thought on and specific moments are selected and created into content that provide meaning on the experience as a whole.

Further reflection on your social meeting papers

“Insights, understanding, intuition, grasping -- they may all be classified as “soft thoughts” more closely associated with feeling and empathic sensibility.”
Soft thoughts → necessary for creativity; less concerned with finding the answer and is more spontaneous or unconstrained
Our social meeting involved understanding and insight towards our group members and their way of thinking. Instead of using the meeting to figure out a solution to how we will approach this semester, it was an open ended meeting where we got to know each other and form our own “soft thoughts” on how we will progress.

THOUGHT: an idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in the mind
INSIGHT: the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing
UNDERSTANDING: the power of abstract thought, intellect
INTUITION: the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning
GRASP: get mental hold of; comprehend fully
FEELING: an emotional state or reaction
EMPATHY: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another
SENSIBILITY: the ability to appreciate and respond to complex emotional or aesthetic influences; sensitivity
EXPRESSION: a word or phrase, especially an idiomatic one, used to convey an idea
