Re: Reflections on Letters
Social networks and new forms of sociality
“Only recently have we started to understand how our social networks affect us.”
Social networking is an entirely new concept. It was only formed recently, being something that my generation grew up with and knows well. For generations that came before my own, the concept is almost foreign and harder to grasp. Therefore, my generation is being looked at to see how we are affected. From my viewpoint, social networks have grown with us. They have opened up a new line of communication for us, connecting us to those who are across the world. Our creative thinking has skyrocketed with the development of social networking because of all of the doors it has opened.
SOCIAL: relating to or designed for activities in which people meet each other for pleasure
NETWORK: a group or system of interconnected people or things
INTERTWINE: connect or link (two or more things) closely
STRUCTURE: the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex
AFFECT: have an effect on; make a difference to
CUSP: a point of transition between two different states
FORM: a particular way in which a thing exists or appears; a manifestation

Re: Reflections on Letters
Looking at what we’re looking at
“You rarely end-up where you were intending to go, but often you end-up somewhere that you needed to be.”
Everyone has a thought of where they want or intend to be. In order to get there, we have to move forward. By moving forward, obstacles can come in the way or new pathways that could make us change our mind. Everything happens for a reason, and as long as you stay true to yourself and what will bring about your success, it is okay to end up somewhere that differs from your original intent. Many people see this happen during their time in college. We start out believing we know what we want, choosing a major that will get us to that end goal. As we go through the process, our classes, new friendships, we change our minds and find what we really want to be. Our course changes, but to where we need to be.
RECURSIVE: characterized by recurrence or repetition
REFLEXIVE: (of a method or theory in the social sciences) taking account of itself or of the effect of the personality or presence of the researcher on what is being investigated
MELD: blend; combine
MOLD: a distinctive and typical style, form or character
MORPH: undergo or cause to undergo a gradual process of transformation
SORT: the arrangement of data in a prescribed sequence
SIFT: examine (something) thoroughly so as to isolate that which is most important or useful
SELECT: carefully choose as being the best or most suitable
VISUAL: related to seeing or sight
MENTAL: relating to the mind
IMAGINARY: existing only in the imagination
PHYSICAL: relating to the body as opposed to the mind
REAL: actually existing as a thing or occurring in fact; not imagined or supposed

Re: Reflections on Letters
Inter-subjective spaces
“You constructed meaning by reflecting upon your experience and expressing it in text.”
By being able to express ourselves in the Fishbowl, we can give life to our thoughts. Our texts are an abstract of the mind, that others can view and have an insight on. By giving our text life, we give it meaning. Without meaning, our thoughts can not grow or find success.
INTER-SUBJECTIVE: existing between conscious minds; shared by more than one conscious mind
FURTHERANCE: the advancement of a scheme or interest
BEDROCK: the fundamental principles on which something is based
SOCIAL: relating to or designed for activities in which people meet each other for pleasure
CONTEXT: the parts of something written or spoken that immediately precede and follow a word or passage and clarify its meaning

Recapping methodology of the fishbowl
Google participant observation
Google social construction of reality
Google symbolic interactionism
Google action research
“You are the master of your destiny, i.e., master of your own outcome”
The amount of effort we put into our abstracts and postings, determines our outcome within this class and our future success. This applies to everything, not just our Fishbowl. While some people believe things happen by fate, we can always change our path towards the future. At any point, we can make a decision that changes it all.
SHIFT: change in emphasis, direction, or focus
WAY: a methody, style, or manner of doing something
METHOD: orderliness of thought or behavior; systematic planning or action

Re: Reflections on Letters
Doing conversation
“We are interested in successful stories in order to proclaim to the world that you did.”
People want to hear success stories. By telling success stories, people are given hope that they will be able to achieve a similar fate. Failures are not looked at in the same way. While we can learn from others failures and mistakes, we want to see how those failures brought about the success.
EXPERIENCE: practical contact with and observation of facts or events
SELECTION: the action or fact of carefully choosing someone or someone as being the best or most suitable
CONVERSATION: a talk, especially in an informal one, between two or more people, in which news and ideas are exchanged
GOAL: the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result
PROCLAIM: announce officially or publicly

What is your metaphor?
Google reader response theory
“The aim of selecting these words, your perceptual categories (metaphors), is to disrupt normal ways of seeing so that people can ask constructive questions about what they are seeing and what they should do.”
Our perceptual categories are a way to give a new thought to the writer. They’re provide a different insight that they might not have seen before. Without perceptual categories, we can not know how the audience sees our work. It brings us forward on to a new path within our abstracts and Fishbowl.
IMAGERY: visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work
RESPONSE: a verbal or written answer

Reader response theory
“In a digital environment, you are the audience and it is your response that constitutes the market”
Social media is like a canvas we share with the world. We all add our own pieces of art to it, and that changes how it is viewed and shows others what we have to share. From there, the world is shaped and what we add relates to what is important now and what others have shared.
DISCLOSE: make (secret or new information) known
OWN: particular to the person or thing mentioned; individual

Re: Reflections on Letters
The nature of metaphor
“A feeling is a response, a reaction to a word.”
We have reactions to words through our feelings all of the time. A person’s text provides with their own feelings, which we then relate to our own. It can bring about positive or negative feelings, as well as neutral. Through our feelings, we can expand upon the text and communicate to others.
RHIZOME: a continuously growing horizontal underground stem which puts out lateral shoots and adventitious roots at intervals
GENERATE: cause (something, especially an emotion or situation) to arise or come about
CHANGE: make or become different
DISCOURSE: written or spoken communication or debate

Re: Reflections on Letters
Looking forward to reading
Google Susan Sontag
“Your manifestations create value and it is how you make money.”
Our texts are we how communicate. By communication, we are able to sell our ideas to others - both literally and figuratively. We communicate our knowledge and skills in order to get a job, where we then use our syntax to do our jobs and make money. It is a system that we learn and succeed in when we understand metaphor.
MIND: a person’s mental processes contrasted with physical action
MENTAL: relating to the mind
CEREBRAL: intellectual rather than emotional or physical
COGNITIVE: relating to cognition
MATERIAL: the matter from which a thing is or can be made
REIFY: make (something abstract) more concrete or real
TENDENCY: an inclination toward a particular characteristic or type of behavior

Re: Reflections on Letters
Simultaneous reading and writing
Looking back at my postings, I can see how my text has evolved and how I can still develop it now. I am the author and I am the future editor to bring it to life in a new way.
SIMULTANEOUS: occurring, operating, or done at the same time
READING: knowledge of literature
WRITING: the activity or skill of marking coherent words on paper and composing text
PRODUCING: make (something) using creative or mental skills
DIVERSE: showing a great deal of variety; very different
EVOLVE: develop gradually, especially from a simple to a more complex form
PATTERN: a repeated decorative design
MEANING: what is meant by a word, text, concept, or action

Reflecting mid-way
Google multitude by Hardt and Negri
“You are not showing how you did it, nor what you did, you are sharing How you Think. Thereby you empower your text.”
By showing how we think, we are showing the process without literally doing so. It provides others with an idea on the process, but also a way to form their own thoughts. How we think is unique, and through our unique contributions to the Fishbowl we are able to empower texts together.
