What's an organization? What's innovation?
The way we design affects behavior
Design thinking is an interactive process

September 11: Notes
September 11
Learning through osmosis
Take words he says and post it under vocabulary with the definitions
Re means change. Redesigning the way we make decisions and we're doing it so better ourselves.
A market thinking of design in creating a living text. If it's not a living text it is dead space. Nothing is going on there
Immerse yourself in the text. Your thinking about it all the time. We preceded one word at a time.
Words are values. Values depend on your selective words.
Social meeting exercise: open-ended meeting.
Big on feelings to attach to words
Ethno notes
Assignment 1
After meeting copy down what each person said when each person showed up. The longer the better for the exercise
From notes circle 6 words. Pairing the 6 words into 3 pairs the words your pairing up are not associated with each other. As different as possible.
Go into the dictionary for those words and your writing it out ane creating simple sentences. You will have 3 sentences.
These sentences are the framework for ou to interrupt your social meeting. What is framing what is interpreting?
Description. Describing incidents from the social meeting.
Under the sentence, a short paragraph describing what happened at the meeting
When we share our differences we get closer to each other. A paradox.
Assignment 2
The precise meaning and significance with vary according to the frame of reference through which it is viewed. (look up all these words and make a sentence out of these words)

Speed up Innovation with Design Thinking
September 18
“Innovation is about new things they may change our world”
“Individuals are stuck between contradictory rules”
“If you truly have a new idea, there's no way you can answer these questions” referring to catch-22 example “how much money will we make” how much will it cost”
“We all can be innovators you can do it yourself I'm not talking about results I'm talking about the process”
“You started off with no plan and ended up with this brilliant idea”
“Someone asks a question someone responds to someone responds and we get a brilliant idea”
“Would this idea be in the world without all these people and questions?” “no”
“Idea fundamentally arise between us, it's not one mind
“Before no one knows what the outcome will be, in the end, they have something they are quite proud of”
“They learn while they create”
“Designers think in option. In designs, they don't think in problems or who is to blame here they think how can we solve it”

Nuance:
We select nuance because we want to determine our differences.
Why do we want to do this? Because that's how we are creating value
First-person action research: GOOGLE SEARCH
Start looking at words as ideas and symbols. So we must understand what a symbol is.
Learning to create design between the 3 of us with these ideas coming to us and we need to sort them. It represents us.
Those on the electronic side of things are making more money. Hands-on jobs are getting left behind.
We are learning to abstract
We want to stay rooted in reality which means our abstraction are models and designs. Is it rooted in reality?
Design of an organization has to do with the identity of an organization
We would always have the same iPhone if there was no organization innovating new things
Critique: how about if you thought about it in another way. Once you understand this you want people to critique you.
Get into the habit of hanging onto words.
Textural turn: like a revolution and things changed after that.
We are creating these realities through the words we select
Cultural shock or cultural value: these things are measurable.
We want to talk about bountiful
Experience is dependent on your social relations among your group.
Assignment 1reminder: writing about your feelings, after the social meeting is over write off your memory. “She said this, He said this” all observation no interpretation. Circle 6 words which represent what happened in your experience. Words are symbols. Put 2 words together that are not closely aligned. Set up a challenge for yourself. Make a sentence between the words. A sentence is a structure and a structure is how things relate to each other. Creating a pool of words. Gather a pool of words after defining these 2 words then make a structure (sentence) there will be 3 paragraphs. One sentence in each paragraph with every 2 words.
The universal must match the particular. The particular is what happened in the social meeting.
Feelings are at the forefront
When you take the machine as a metaphor: you have an image of a machine. Then out down the words which you associate with that image: interconnected, moving parts, wash. Images create a mental space, the metaphor determines the behavior.
Strictly Ballroom Movie:
The height shows us the structure of the film
Every metaphor has its own vocabulary.
These emotions are real because of the machine. Gradings of performance
In the machine metaphor, you cannot handle emotion because nobody knows what to say.
You give your whole life to an organization and they run on the machine metaphor
Efficiency is very overrated.
“How did you like my dance over the weekend” “I don't know” could not communicate his words.
The audience has come into the forefront. Everyone wants the largest audience. The only way out is to create a living text. When you follow it becomes dead space.
Learn to listen and wait for someone creativeness to come forth
You can't exist without the support of your peers
Ask the right question to get the answer

impact, engagement, and innovativeness
Impact of postings, and experience of engagement with each other, new processes and methods of doing things
Changing the way you think: requires you to identify how you do think and then it requires to show evidence to when and where you changed your thinking process.
How has to do with the words you choose. Substituting words to make it very simple and clear for yourself. Keep substituting
Learning takes place upon reflection it occurs afterward so learning occurs upon a reflection and it has a realization
We are enhancing our understanding, the outcome is getting deep learning (google search)
What you do with google searches is scroll through it and looking for one sentence which helps you to understand what you're doing in the fishbowl. Constructing structures. You want to know the author's name and their techniques. So if we are asked to google a name study it and pull out a sentence
Pick a sentence you are comfortable with so deconstruct it and make it simple.

Money is made if your skills are conceptual
Felt experiment: give an example and empower your text
You have to learn how to empower your text
Your status doesn't make any difference
Reification
You are learning to write your own textbook
To capture fleeting image in your mind or knowing
Movie:
Wounded city
Shows picture or postcard of city
A little girl in Oklahoma would wait for magazines about new york city
Had an imagination about another place that probably wasn't as realistic as she thought
Stone by stone built her life
She followed her imagination
“Brave foolish 25 year olf girl”
Emphasizes the meaning of girl
More afraid of leaving and going down than going
If I got killed someone would have o feed her cat, her perspective changed once she had human dependance
Women just wants to help
You can tell he is upset but is not crying
People show emotions in different ways
He keeps thinking about other people and how they will feel
One step at a time, one word at a time
He cant write the eulogies
He might not be in tact with his emotions and doesn't have the right vocabulary to explain what he is feeling
She is the leader
Not much to say about bill “ordinary guy” no one is ordinary
Shes leading the conversation she's asking question to get him to express
He starts by expressing images of bill to understand and explain to him
Breaking it down step by step
Always looking out for others
Takes him a while to explain bill had to focus on the smaller things to explain the bigger things
Starts to talk more
She is getting him to open up
He starts crying after she leaves not while she is there
He needs help with words
Shes is good with her words, expressing his feelings for him
He gets more confident when reading the eulogy as he reads it
“There your words I just put them in order”
The social construction of reality
Symbolic interaction
Self-reflexivity

Metaphors
The impact is extraordinary when you work the text
The only way to live in a big city is your life in your village
Our village is the fishbowl
Everything connects
The metaphor between train and 9/11
Willing to learn
Shows his sadness with emotions but not as well with words
Slowly shift from talking about the men to other conversation
They become more comfortable around each other
He starts to look less sad when they start talking about something else
Opens up about himself
Explains how he dances and she is survived
Starts to ask her questions
She was teaching him now he's teaching her how to dance
She starts thinking about him and looks at him differently once she finds out he can dance

Having flexible structures is very important
You're designing and text, designing an organization which we are looking at through reading and writing.
You have to understand to have an impact
Make a shift in your skills if you mess up
Change your vocabulary
Focused: looking at the word and the word has images and that's where the information is coming to you from and curious:
There are different ways of thinking
And each way of thinking is known as a discourse
It's a way of thinking which means its a way of doing
Both go hand in hand
Theory and practice
Who you are is what you express
Quality happens when you match the barstact word or image with your felt experience
Your always projecting your felt experience
Learning in a humanistic way of thinking
Strictly ballroom: all about steps, and getting the steps right and it's about fran who has her own steps but is following others
How do you design an organization for fran and scott to thrive
That's the challenge
Second film
Directly has to do with what this place is about
The power of words
The power of images
As designer becoming our own theories and doing this my images and metaphors, a word is a metaphor
A word has an image attached to it and vise versa
These things are interchangeable
The moment you selecting a word your selecting an image
Whenever you select an image your making a choice of a metaphor
And when looking at amthor you're really looking at symbols
You encounter your everyday reality in your felt experience
Textual analysis and discourse analysis, these are skills and methods.
