Deconstructing letters 25 – Looking at what we’re looking at
Deconstructing letters 25 – Looking at what we’re looking at
The concept of recursion is one that I am very familiar with as it is a key solution in computer science. In computer science it is a function that ends up calling one’s self and is a difficult concept for many students to grasp. I remember first learning about recursion in my sophomore year though a classical problem that could be solved through recursion which is the Towers of Hanoi. The key to recursion is to solve a tiny portion of the problem and have the rest of the problem be someone else’s problem. This is similar to the recursion in the letter as a small part of the problem is solved and then it is constantly reexamined and reworked to solve another small part until something is created.

Deconstructing letters 26 – Inter-subjective spaces
I agree fully with the conclusions of this letter. The meaning that was created via our reflection and an inter-subjective space is the bedrock of every social context. Your choice of the word bedrock conjures images of engineering to me, specifically bridge construction. I thought back to a documentary I watch a long time ago where an issue in the construction of the Brooklyn bridge was the sandy base. To solve this foundational issue the engineers had to drill down deep to find the bedrock just like we did in our social meeting reflections.

Deconstructing letters 27 – Facing each other
Deconstructing letters 27 – Facing each other
I find the story of creating something new to be very interesting. The creation of something new is unique amongst new things. Whenever we have a new experience, they can be exciting or daunting due to the uncertainty. However, thoughts of uncertainty can be assuaged though carful preparation or the reflection of others that have come before like attending mock interviews. The creation of something new is different as you do not have the experience of others to reflect on as no one has done this exact thing before so there is always uncertainty in the creation of something new until you actually do it.

Deconstructing letters 28 – Recapping Methodology of the fishbowl
Your mentioning of society, design and culture being three legs of as stool to me evokes thoughts of the command economies of the former eastern bloc. Through design the Soviet Union tried shape society and culture to form a utopia. The result was an initial improvement in society with the spread of vacation and workers’ rights. However, this progress did not continue and stagnated. Therefor in my eyes the best way to implement the ideas of this letter, being the master of one’s own destiny and forging your own path is best implemented through capitalism and the free markets are.

Deconstructing letters 29 – Doing conversation
Deconstructing letters 29 – Doing conversation
This letter’s focus on conversation and how this class is about society makes me reflect on specific conversations I have had with my sister. My sister works in the tech industry and truly believes in technology like blockchain revolutionizing the world through things like crypto currency. I on the other hand work in the military-industrial complex and believe in the government institutions currently set up. This difference often leads to a discussion of the future of society the way my sister sees it. She believes government will in future no longer exists and every person will become a nation unto themselves where as I work to secure America’s current place in the sun. These conversations show what conversation means to me. Conversation to me is the exchanging of ideas between multiple people.

Deconstructing letters 30 – Science of networks
This letter’s mention of uncertainty in science is something that I completely agree with and harkens me back to a conversation I had in a different class regarding our groups forecast. A forecast I created for several rounds in the future was very much disliked by one member of the group because I could guarantee that it would be wrong. That person didn’t like that I knew the forecast would be wrong so they wanted to disregard the information entirely. This connects to your letter’s mention that some people might not think it is science because it is not clear-cut logic like in textbooks. However, I can say that anyone that has conducted research knows that science is not clear cut initially as there are infinite variables that effects an outcome that need to be isolated before you can assert anything.

Deconstructing letters 31 – Reader response theory
Deconstructing letters 31 – Reader response theory
This letter’s discussion of reader response theory made me reflect on the vast number of books that I read in elementary and middle school. At this point in time I personally did not have a videogame console or a computer but my parents would buy me as many books as I wanted so I was an avid reader. This letter made me reflect on what my response was when I read all of those books. One such response that I had while reading the Hardy boy’s series was that my critical thinking was being developed because I wanted to piece together the clues to solve the mystery. Another response I had to one of the books was changing the ways I write my sevens. I changed to writing them the European way with a bar, because I wanted to be unique and one of the clues in the book was that an American used a European seven.

Deconstructing letters 32 – Your Fishbowl is your YouTube channel
This YouTube channel makes me think of how society today is very much focused on appearances and fame. Sure, as you said in your letter he is bound to succeed as he has the theory under his belt but I find such efforts as egotistical and not beneficial to society as a whole. Through his use of the theory form this class is undoubtedly creating value to many people but it does not contribute to the betterment of society that for example green energy research contributes. Therefor this use of the theory is self-serving best to be put aside.

Deconstructing letters 33 – Simulating complex adaptive systems
Deconstructing letters 33 – Simulating complex adaptive systems
The discussion of complex adaptive systems in cyberspace and the science of simulation makes me reflect on the work I did at my internship. At this internship I worked in creating simulations. The simulations that we created were themselves complex, adaptive systems. We tried to create an artificial world that would react realistically to real world input. Of note is that the way in which we tried to map the universe from real space into cyber space was through direct observation and experiment. We did this by constantly sending observers to create real world examples and observe them to see if the simulation is truly representative of the real world.

Deconstructing letters 34 – Morning thoughts developing a voice
Deconstructing letters 34 – Morning thoughts developing a voice
I find the mention of how a computer can generate any image and displace your real image very interesting. You mention that what is at stake is your voice however what the previous statement neglects is how much of our lives is based in the digital world how vulnerable even the voice we develop truly is. Computers can not only replicate our image but they can hack our accounts and modulate our voice. Video’s and can be created of things we never said and posted on hack accounts and fake tweets can be sent out. These actions that computers can easily do with some effort would corrupt what voice we created and supplant that voice. I just found it interesting how fragile that voice that we are developing is in this new digital society.

Deconstructing letters 35 – Looking forward to reading
Deconstructing letters 35 – Looking forward to reading
Your use of metaphor directly illustrates why I never liked them. Firstly, it is a mixed metaphor as Titan’s can either refer to the Greek mythological parents of the gods or someone very important and Merlin which can only refer to the Arthurian legend have nothing to do with each other. Secondly the metaphor does not have anything to do with the sentence before as it is about learning from action.
In my view your statement of making our text and images and felt-experiences material by abstracting them is reverse of what is actually happening. I think that we are making the abstractions real by attaching our felt experiences text and images to them.

Deconstructing letters 36 – Simultaneous reading and writing
This letter’s mention of your contractor and how you will show them the work that they are disturbing has me reflect on when my family constructed our own patio. Right after our family had contractors construct an addition to our house my mother decided we should also add a patio. When considering ways to achieve this goal we considered hiring more contractors however due my mother’s reluctance to deal with then my father would have had to take time off from work to deal with them. So instead of hiring some contractors to construct the patio my mother ended up creating it herself. This in turn makes me think of you and the books your pal gave you on patio construction. If you were to read them and construct a patio yourself you would participate in a similar reading and writing processes as you remember the text in your mind and construct a patio.
