Structures: To CONSTRUCT a thought requires ideas.

Matt:
Integrated: COMBINED efforts lead to the best results.
Networking: INTERCONNECTION is the key to success in modern society.
Structure: FRAMEWORKS provide the foundation upon which all else is built.

Felt experience:
Isabella: I can remember how I felt when I received my first acceptance letter into college. The ORDER in which I got my acceptance was through a large blue letter in the mail. I was shocked, astounded and proud. I was ready to START my journey as a college student, increasing my knowledge and abilities one step at a time. I was excited to CONNECT with new people and make friends, but I was also scared. I would be going to school in Rhode Island, four hours from home. I would not see my family often and would have to figure things out on my own. I was hope full I would accomplish this, but of course still hesitant.

Brynn: I was 10 years old when my parents told me I was going to be having a new sibling and I was no longer the youngest in the family. I thought I was going to get left out and the new baby would create an imbalance in the family CONSTRUCT. When we found out they were giving birth to a girl I imagined myself being forgotten as the only girl in the family once the new baby came. My Nana called me 4 hours after her arrival and I was taken to the hospital to be UNITED with her for the first time. I'm walking down the hallway nervous with butterflies and underlying excitement. I see my dad and he is pushing my new sister, Rylie, in a little cart. I lean down and look into her big blue eyes and say, "I don't get it, she looks like an alien." He told me to be quiet and to not say that in front of my mom. What I learned is that change is inevitable and we must NAVIGATE through new and different challenges.

Matt:
Matt: Over the summer I spent a few hours volunteering at the Rhode Island Food Bank. There were many of us, and we were each assigned a specific task and formed an assembly line. Though we each had separate jobs, our efforts were INTERCONNECTED as the completion of one person’s task was essential for the next person’s ability to complete their task. Our individual efforts were COMBINED to achieve high productivity and efficiency. The Food Bank uses this FRAMEWORK for completing tasks because it is successful in preparing large quantities of donated goods for shipment and it feeds the most people.

Two words →
Accomplish: Success, fulfill, achieve, execute, perpetrate, realize, reach, actualize, materialize, complete
Hesitant: Reluctant, tentative, ambivalent, skeptical, dubious, uncertain, doubtful, afraid, wary, disinclined
Re-Structure:
To achieve SUCCESS, one must balance SKEPTICISM and acceptance.

Felt Experience:
Isabella: Right now I am starting to apply to law school. All I can think about is SUCCESS at the end of the road, that is hopefully begin excepted. Of course there is SKEPTICISM in my head regarding if I will. The competition is overwhelming, the standardized test is challenging and the factors that determine my future are unknown. I have accepted if I do not receive entry to the place of my choice I will work a year in the finance industry to build my knowledge, then I will try again until I succeed.

Brynn: Living alone in NYC over the summer was nerve racking but also exhilarating. It
created a new type of independence in me that I enjoyed even though I was SKEPTICAL about my choice. I found myself walking around aimlessly through different boroughs to create new experiences. Being alone got me to SUCCESSFULLY take care of myself.

Matt:This past spring I took a chance and decided to run for President of Beta Alpha Psi, which is URI’s accounting honor society. Having never served as a club officer before, I was SKEPTICAL about my chances in the election. On the evening of the vote I gave a speech to the club members, asking for their vote. Afterwards, I left the room and waited in the hall for the results of the vote. When the door opened again, I was informed of my SUCCESS in the election. I was grateful for everyone who cast their vote for me and I have since worked hard to provide great opportunities for our members.

Final paragraphs:
REALIZED: To comprehend completely or correctly
INSIGHT: The ability to discern the true nature of a situation, especially by intuition

Isabella: Words are an important part of our everyday lives. Through this activity, as a group we have been able to use words to evoke feelings, memories and intertwine ideas. This activity has helped me visualize the movement and connection of words and ideas we have. We built a “structure” in which our knowledge can flow to one another, integrating it into new concepts. This new found network has meaning.

Matt: Words are symbols that evoke feelings within us. We always associate emotions and images with text; it is an involuntary, natural reaction that occurs within us. Through this exercise, I was enlightened by the many associations I formed with the text. From the initial opening structure, my thoughts travelled in different directions as I created word pools and pulled from my own felt experiences to expand on and create new associations. My thoughts and emotions evolved throughout this exercise, and my understanding of the initial opening structure greatly expanded.

Brynn: Words are one of the great tools we humans use to communicate every minute of every day. It is something we all have in common and a constant medium in networking and socializing. This fishbowl activity I did with my group gave a new meaning to the attachment between words and feelings. Something I will take away from this is the importance of how certain words will connect with specific ideas and in turn expand one’s understanding of the topic or story being told.

Brynn:
Complex: Many people create an ELABORATE plan in order to succeed in their goals.
Adaptive: You can CUSTOMIZE a shoe online to your liking.
Systems: A police station is a type of government ESTABLISHMENT.

Matt:
Complex: An ELABORATE problem requires deep reflection.
Adaptive: In our world we must ADJUST to change.
Systems: Successful organizations develop STRATEGIES for success.

Felt Experience
Isabella: I started to CONSTRUCT my Law School application. Meticulously writing my personal statement and resume. I was nervous, anxious, even scared. I was hoping that every line I wrote would evok something in the admissions proofer. I went back and forth MODIFYING words, sentences, paragraphs until I felt it was perfect. As I applied last week, I MERGED my documents together, my information and knowledge of the school. As I pressed send my heart was racing. “Will they like my application?” I thought. “What happens if they don’t?” I pondered.

Brynn: When I was younger I had to attend a multitude of award shows during my Grandfather's retired social life. It was always good for the family to arrive and leave together to ESTABLISH a healthy personal life for my Grandfather. I was always given very ELABORATE and fancy dresses to wear that was appropriately CUSTOMIZED for the occasion. I remember I refused to wear the beautiful red velvet dress that was made for me. Instead I opted to wear my pink ballerina skirt, a swim top, and Barbie sunglasses. My Grandfather asked my mom to bring me home separately after I said hello to all of his former coworkers and celebrity guests.

Matt: When I first started college I was unsure which major to pick. There were so many to choose from, and I had so many different interests, it felt like such an ELABORATE problem. I started out undeclared, tried out Communications and then switched to Accounting. I had to make several ADJUSTMENTS before I found the perfect fit. Since declaring my major, I have worked with many advisors to develop a STRATEGY for success in my major.

Re-structure (one sentence)
Many people who seem UNALIKE often COOPERATE.

Felt experience
Isabella: As I grow up, I look back on my childhood and realize how UNALIKE we all were. As kids every year we would go to maryland to my uncles. He had 4 acers of land where we would ride 4 wheelers and go carts. As children all four of us were UNALIKE. I liked to race these go cares all over the field, while Lyla my sister, had no interest in the matter. One year my youngest brother Luke was wondering by the fire pit. He was young and naive, and put his hand on the fire. He burned himself and started to cry. All of us rushed over to help him, pouring water on his hand and giving him ice. We all learned to COOPERATE even with our differences in order to help Luke.

Brynn: Growing up with an older brother, Kyle, we often did not get along. We were very UNALIKE and had different interests. One day he came into my room while I was playing with my Barbie dolls and Ken. Kyle, in an effort to COOPERATE with me, sat down and asked if he could join me in playing Barbie dream house. I let him play with me but he could only play Ken. He later cried to my mom and told her I was a “meanie” because he didn’t always want to play Ken.

Matt: During my freshman year of college I was assigned a partner to complete a project with in my calculus class. My partner hardly attended class, did not care to learn the material and was reluctant to work with me on the project. We were very UNALIKE because I am very focused and motivated in school. The largest challenge I faced while working on this project was not mastery of the material, but finding ways to get my partner to COOPERATE. It took some strategizing, but I found ways to make the work convenient for her, and eventually we got the work done. In the end, our ability to COOPERATE despite the ways we were UNALIKE resulted in a thoughtful project.

Final paragraphs
Isabella: Through words we can connect complex ideas and thoughts. Here we have built a system to guide us through this process. Our group is learning to adapt to this new way of thinking, weaving words, symbols and ideas together. We are learning about each other and discovering new things.

Brynn: By doing this assignment again with a new, different, and challenging set of words we have learned new things. New things about ourselves, new words, and experiences from one another. We are telling a story about how we process the different words and what ideas and life experiences come to mind.

Matt: This assignment challenged me to take the words further. By pushing myself to generate word pools, develop new associations and connect anecdotes to the concepts, I gained a rich understanding of the text. I also pushed myself to take the methodology I learned through the Integrated Networking Structures assignment and apply it in a new context with a new set of words.

Unique innovative capabilities

Innovative: featuring new methods; advanced and original.
Capabilities: the power or ability to do something.

Innovative: original, method, new, novel, fresh, indigenous, native, unused, recent
Capabilities: ability, capacity, power, potentially, faculty, qualification

Brynn:

Capabilities: credentials, qualification, ability, aptness, experience, skill, capacity, competence

Matt:
Unique: different, uncommon, particular, rare, individual, distinct, offbeat
Innovative: ingenious, inventive, original, cutting-edge, imaginative, creative
Capabilities: capacity, competence, facility, means, proficiency, aptitude

Re-Structuring
Isabella:
Unique: Many people have the POTENTIAL to do great things.
Innovative: A new METHOD can lead to a new learning experience
Capabilities: You need specific QUALIFICATION to be hired for a job

Brynn:
Unique: Being PECULIAR is one of my favorite characteristics.
Innovative: The light bulb is one INVENTION that changed mankind.
Capabilities: To be a doctor you must have certain CREDENTIALS.

Matt:
Unique: One should consider UNCOMMON approaches to common problems.
Innovative: INVENTIVE ideas should be embraced.
Capabilities The CAPACITY to adapt to change is critical to success.

Felt Experience
Isabella: Today my best friend found out she did not get the job she wanted. She followed the application METHOD to a tee and met the QUALIFICATIONS. She has so much POTENTIAL. I was heartbroken for her, discouraged and mad. How could they say no to such a smart amazing person, ready to learn and work hard? This I do not know. I told her to keep her head up and continue to apply, she will succeed.

Brynn: I went to a private school called Brown School and every year students would participate in a state wide competition called INVENTION convention. I entered and created the very PECULIAR looking popsicle drip catcher. Clearly as a seven year old kid, I did not have the CREDENTIALS of an actual inventor. To my surprise I was one of the top five finalists and placed third overall in the state of New York.

Matt: During my sophomore year of college I took a class called Proposal Writing with Clients. In the class we were challenged to develop INVENTIVE solutions to the problems of a real-life company. The problems were presented to us in the form of a ‘request for proposal’, and we had to respond with a proposal. The UNCOMMON approach that my group took was to implement multiple solutions in conjunction with one another. Our biggest challenge when working on the project was ensuring that the company had adequate CAPACITY and resources to implement the solutions we proposed.

2. Continued: advance, endure, extend, survive, prevail, remain, protract, maintain, progress, persevere, prolong, sustain, last, withstand
Re-structure (one sentence)

Dismay / advance
One’s DISMAY at the hand of failure should not prevent one from ADVANCING on in their journey.

Felt experience
Isabella: Over the summer I applied for an internship. I called, fill out the paperwork and was ready for the interview process. Unfortunately I did not get it. I was in DISMAY, sad, upset and frustrated. I was disappointed in myself for not succeeding. Yet, I ADVANCED forward and apply to more. I worked hard, fixed my resume and practiced my talking points.

Brynn: During summer 2019 I lived in Brooklyn, New York and had an internship located in the financial district. Learning the subway system was harder than I had expected and keeping up with my workload added stress. To my DISMAY I became reluctant to find a job with my major after graduation because of how much I disliked my brand licensing internship. I ADVANCED in my living and work situation in the city for the duration of the summer and finished my internship strong. It was definitely a growing and learning experience for me.

Matt: I took Proposal Writing with Clients during my sophomore year because students from the class were eligible for an internship with the company (IGT) at the end of the course. I was the youngest student in the class, so I knew my chances of securing the internship were slim, but I applied anyways. After several interviews I was informed that I was not to receive an offer. I was very DISMAYED after hearing his news because it was my first time applying to a large company. Instead of letting this news get me down, I decided to focus on school and continued to ADVANCE in my pursuits. During my junior year, I worked tirelessly and eventually received internship offers from PwC, EY and KPMG.

Brynn—> Expected
Matt—> Chances
Brynn
myself—> Learning
Isabella —> Ready
Matt—> Securing
Matt
myself—> Focus
Isabella—> Forward
Brynn—> Strong

Final paragraphs
Isabella: Through this activity I have learned at applied “Unique innovative capabilities”. We have created new ideas and knowledge through our ability to write felt experiences, exploring our thoughts. We talked about and thought unique things through our experiences. We took our words further to do this. We substitute words to further our understanding.

Brynn: By doing this new activity with "unique innovative capabilities" I have learned that being capable of a variety of things is a fundamental element of organization. I can apply my capabilities throughout a variety of ideologies and institutions in different ways to create different outcomes. My biggest takeaway is that I can grow and learn from my felt experience and better myself by understanding my abilities and utilizing them in a more subjective way.

Matt: Throughout this paper I focused on the perceptual categories I selected. I was enlightened about the concept of perceptual categories in a recent letter in the Fishbowl. The idea that one word, as in the perceptual category, can represent so many thoughts, ideas, emotions and experiences is immensely powerful. For this reason, I brought my focus to selecting the right word, the right symbol and the right metaphor to represent the felt experiences in full. This also connects to reader-response theory as I attach meaning to the text written by others in my group.

Matt:
Dynamic: We must MODIFY our expectations in the face of reality.
Decision: When presented with many options it can be challenging to make a CHOICE.
Making: ESTABLISHING precedent can create conformity in decision-making.

Felt Experience
Isabella:
When I was a child it was VITAL to be kind to your siblings, share with others and behave. Over all we did so, but with siblings it can be hard. I am one of four, the oldest, which can be difficult at times. We had to learn to accept each others differences and RESOLVE arguments that would occur. My parents implemented a STRUCTURE into our daily routines since there are so many of us. We would do activities together and take turns choosing what we wanted to do or where we wanted to go.

Brynn:
As a younger kid I was very ACTIVE and played a lot of sports. Such as: soccer, basketball, baseball, cheerleading, and volleyball. I was all over the place. I was also a very stubborn kid and as much as I loved sitting out for games due to an injury, I hated being injured. I had broken my collarbone but since it is such a discretely used bone I had no idea. I went two weeks without a RESOLUTION for my pain until I finally told my mom and we went to the ER. To my surprise the only INGREDIENTS to heal a collarbone is a sling and rest; something I had never done as a child.

Matt:
As the Operations Intern for the Newport Music Festival two summers ago, I had many varying responsibilities. Each day, I had to MODIFY my role to accommodate the needs of the day. Work was hectic because the Festival was under new management, so I played a role in ESTABLISHING the responsibilities of my position. My supervisor trusted me so I often had the freedom of CHOICE with many of the decisions I was presented.

2. Accommodate: adapt, adjust, integrate, fit, modify, comply, conform, tailor

Re-structure (one sentence)
It is DIFFICULT to ADAPT to new situations.

Felt experience
Isabella:When I was nine, I moved from NYC to NJ. I can remember walking into my new home, boxes in hand, confused and worried. My parents set up a mini TV, one of the old ones with the huge box in the back, in the living room for us. My brother and I sat on pillows, watched TV and ate jiffy pop as my parents unpacked. It was DIFFICULT being in a new place. I was scared I wouldn’t make friends and that I wouldn’t like NJ. I had to ADAPT to my new surroundings.

Brynn: My birthday is July 28th, that means my astrological sign is a Leo. In my opinion, Leo is the best sign you could be born with; self centered is one of my characteristic traits. Being DIFFICULT is also one of my personality traits and one that I am not proud of. However, I am collected when it comes to ADAPTING to change and can thrive in very stressful situations. For example, today I had an exam and had no idea. I had not studied and I was not prepared in any way. There was nothing I could change about the situation so I sat down and took the exam. I did have a pit in my stomach for the first two pages but I muddled through.

Matt: When I was in second grade my school district was overhauled and I was sent to a new school. At the time I could not understand why I had to go to a new school and leave some of my friends behind. I was devastated and the change was very DIFFICULT for me. However, once I met my new classmates and became familiar with my new school I finally ADAPTED to the change. Things were looking up, and by graduation I didn’t want to leave.

Matt

Isabella—> Confused
Brynn—> Collected

Final paragraphs
Isabella: Through my own experiences and my groups related to dynamic decision making, we are part of the multitude. I have explored individuality within my felt experiences, my writing is unique and free. We decided on words, took them further and learned a new meaning.

Brynn: To me, "dynamic decision making" are complex and happen in real-time. By observing people's abilities to use their experiences to control a certain complex system, even those that lead to a different and maybe even better decision. I took away a better understanding of how our decisions and choices impact our future and the people around us. It is very interesting to examine the words, meanings, and experiences behind them.

Matt: As I connected my own experiences and shared anecdotes related to the concept of dynamic decision-making, I thought about all the ways in which I have adapted to changes in my own life. In a dynamic world we must be willing and able to adapt to change. This is a common theme of this course, and we considered this concept in step eight when we worked together to create one structure by writing, “It is difficult to adapt to new situations.” Bridging the concept with my own experiences helped me develop a deeper understanding of the concept and a knowing related to an important theme of this course.
