Re: TAKING AND MAKING NOTES
September 17th 2019 (week two)
In class today we started to dive into the true purpose of “fishbowl”. We live in a world where there is constant distraction.
Fishbowl;
Constant distractions
Relearn how we write and communicate
Between you and your text (fishbowl)
Learning happens through reflection
Learning to create knowledge and learning to create a knowing (I experienced this)
Creating a society that is visual reality
Network society and visual reality ; what are they
The Pre-individual
We rearrange notes so it works for us, it is to help us
Symbols, images, works, feelings, what do they evoke
We look at words carefully; how to we look at it carefully, selecting words for the words (knowledge is kept)
Association
Always posting and writing to add value to the group? How do we view value
Don't copy- create value

9/17 Class 2 Notes
The importance of vocabulary:
- We are learning NUANCE
- We write with an individual NUANCE
- Demonstrated through use of vocabulary
- We become REDUNDANT when we don’t use vocabulary precisely
- Improve communication by expanding our vocabulary
Creating value in the Fishbowl:
- Diversity is important for creativity and making money
- Study how we are different in the Fishbowl
- Stand out by being different
- We are always posting to:
1. Create value for ourselves
2. Create value for the group
3. Create learning, knowledge and a knowing
- Copying has use in learning, but it’s different in the Fishbowl
- Avoid copying to show and promote our differences
On Learning:
- Learning is all about CONNECTIVITY (the sharing of information)
- We must learn to grapple with a:
1. Network society
2. Visual society (relates to YouTube video)
- Requires daily practice
- As healthy living requires daily consumption of vegetables
On Assignments:
- The homework is EMERGENT
- It is constantly being sent to us
- We must surf the wave of emerging assignments and information
- We’ll soon get the drift of it
Social Meeting Assignment:
General idea:
- Meet over a drink
- Get to know one another and develop a comfortable social dynamic
- It’s easier to meet as a group if we are comfortable with one another
Take ethnographic notes
- Before the meeting: the pre-individual (how we feel before the meeting)
- During the meeting: observe everything (conversation, body language, anything of notice)
- After the meeting: reflect on observations in notes
Using ethnographic notes:
1. Circle 6 words
- Identify associated images, symbols, concepts, phenomenon
- Pair words to create 3 dichotomies
2. Create 3 sentences using dichotomies
- Abstractions (no first-person)
- Should apply universally
3. Write 3 paragraphs, one for each sentence
An Observation:
- It was mentioned in class that someone who writes lengthily or posts frequently in the Fishbowl might be trying too hard to get an A and is insecure about getting a good grade
- This is not necessarily true, as some people are more thorough and detail-oriented than others
- This is just one way in which we are different, and is something to be observed, not judged, in the Fishbowl
- I am one of these thorough, detail-oriented people, so that is how I plan to post
- I will observe how others post in the Fishbowl, however, and learn from them
Vocabulary: Nuance, Redundant, Connectivity, Emergent,

-Looking for evidence of you learning, where is the learning
-Growth takes place in learning
-Images are used as metaphors here
-Speaking about your process
-He is trying to make it confusing, the world is very confusing now

10/1 Class 3 Notes
- Social meeting exercise covered our first topic: Friendship in The Workplace
- Following this method of study throughout the semester
- APPERCEPTION: “looking at ourselves, looking at ourselves”
- Performative writing (marriage example: must say “I do” or the ceremony has not been performed)
- Work in this class should be simple, fun, interesting, challenging
Websites with similar research goals as the Fishbowl:
- Iated.org/inted
- Iated.org/edulearn
On posting in the Fishbowl:
- Google searches: look for a sentence or phrase that speaks to you and post it under the name of the topic
- “You can’t eat your vegetables all at once at the end of the month, you have to eat them everyday” --> Post regularly in the Fishbowl
- “Where is the learning?” --> We need to show our learning
- “We are ENHANCING each other”
- An example of enhancement: Selecting certain posts in the Fishbowl as examples
- “You’re sending too many emails” --> No, we are being overly conscious in our responses to the Letters
- “The emails are confusing” --> That’s the point; Simulates the confusion of the Internet
- We are practicing NONLINEAR thinking
- We are studying the relation between 2 concepts
- A concept is a word, a word is a symbol, a symbol is an image, and image is an idea
- When someone asks for your ideas, they are observing your selection of words that create a response
- “The chaos of the Fishbowl is completely nullified when you keep this process in mind”
- “The dictionary is our toolbox”
- Following this method of study throughout the semester
- APPERCEPTION: “looking at ourselves, looking at ourselves”
- Performative writing (marriage example: must say “I do” or the ceremony has not been performed)

Integrated Networking Structure – Fishbowl: 10+1 Steps
1. Structure
- Done individually
- “We enter the unknown with a structure.”
- Integrated Networking Structure
2. Word Pool
- Done individually
- Word selection is very important --> “It can make a difference of a million dollars.”
- Cast net as wide as possible, make word pool as large as possible
- Always take your words further
3. Re-Structure
- Done individually
- Abstraction
- Your version of what a word means
- “If it makes sense to you, it’s an A.”
- It’s about RELATIONALITY
4. Felt-Experience (FE)
- Done individually
- First person, talking about yourself
- Short explanation of an incident or an event that you have experienced
- Must fit the abstraction
- Start with the feeling --> “Even the most mundane experience creates a feeling in us”
5. 1/2/3 : 1/2/3 : 1/2/3
- Done as group
- Select 9 words from word pool
- Reductionist technique --> Google
- Representation
- Symbolic
- Perception (we are sharing our perceptional categories)
6. A / B
- Done as group
- From the 9 words we are going to select 2 words and create a pair
- Best pairs are opposites
- One word should not describe the other
7. Word Pool
- Done as group (or individually and combine)
- Take the two words further and create a word pool
8. Structure
- Done as group
- Write sentence from word pool

Agast- not a real word, its actually spelled "aghast"
-The reaction of the girl after our professor telling her to take the course again. I agree with her. She claimed she didn't learn a single thing. I on the other hand have learned a ton of new vocab words, ideologies, and understand the material completely. However, sitting in class and listening to his string of thought is unnecessary and complete "mumbo jumbo". I would take the course again but with a different professor.

Dynamic decision making
Unique innovative capabilities

-Participant Observation
-Self/social reflexivity
-Action research
-Auto ethnography
