Globalization is defined as the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale. Throughout this course, we focused on the 4 characteristics of global businesses. The first focus was integrated networking structures, followed by complex adaptive systems, dynamic decision making, and unique innovative capabilities. Through understanding and experiencing these four models, we created basic structures, or as we call them “10+1 steps.”
For the first structure, integrated networking structures, I was extremely confused and had no idea what I was doing and the meaning behind it. I was not used to having to use deep thinking in my writing and felt experiences were brand new to me. The first experience I wrote about had to do with gymnastics, something that is very meaningful to me. At first, I figured I would feel most comfortable expressing something not to deep, but still very significant. After formation of the first characteristic, I realized how every word I chose had a reason behind it, something that I did not perceive before.
By the second characteristic, complex adaptive systems, things were beginning to click. The process of using word pools, restructuring and interacting was coming together and I started to really understand the meaning behind it. I learned that you must adapt to different situations in life and acquire the knowledge of how to interact with all kinds of people. Also, that restructuring allows us to show our abilities of adjusting to that change.
The last two characteristics, dynamic decision making and unique innovative capabilities made me realize my improvement in the creation of these structures. I became aware of the importance of decision making and the significance of being unique.
As a finance major, there are not many classes that allow us to really express ourselves and think critically beyond numbers and case studies. I got to connect in ways I never have before and work in groups in a new and different way. I had the chance to work side by side with my group throughout the semester. There are some classes where group assignments consist of just dividing the work up. However, this class is not like that. I had the opportunity of interacting with two classmates every week and learning their way of expressing themselves and who they are as a person. It was great to see what we had in common, while also appreciating our differences.
Coming into this class, I had no idea what to expect. I wasn’t even completely sure what business in society was all about. However, I am coming out of this class with improved writing, vocabulary and a new view on the world. As well as a better understanding of who I am as a person. In conclusion, business in society and the fishbowl will always be something I remember.
